t his year’s residential trip to robinwood was a great success. the children threw themselves into every activity with tremendous energy and enthusiasm, and we were very proud of the way they faced-up to all the new challenges! this week’s work reception have been making ‘grass heads’ this week and making their own spiders’ webs for our outdoor area! year 1 have been learning about the world cup. they each picked a country out of a hat and had to paint the flag and research that country using the ipads. they also drew some beautiful castles! in year 2, albert can explain what the torah is and why it is special, and rory can demonstrate clearly how to halve and double. in year 3, logan wrote a funny description of what he thinks girls are really like (!) and arian explained in great detail the function of roots. in year 4, harrison was very accurate when reading data from a table and phoebe correctly identified all the key points of a story. in year 5, finlay responded to a design brief for a beach resort and grace imagined she was a pigeon flying over a gloomy village – wonderful work! football news! another well done to the y5 girls’ and boys’ football teams who competed at goshen sport centre. both teams played brilliantly and got to the final. they both came 2 nd . the girls’ team has been invited to attend the summer games 2018 opening ceremony at the etihad stadium , where they will be representing bury in the greater manchester finals! well done! there is lots more work to enjoy on the children’s work page school band performance at the british empire awards ceremony well done to our excellent young musicians for giving a superb performance in bury town hall in support of the british empire awards ceremony. the children entertained some extremely important guests and represented the school brilliantly! we have received a lovely letter of thanks from the lord-lieutenant of greater manchester and a donation of £500 to the school! we have also had a letter from our local mp , james frith, to say how proud he is of the school band and to congratulate them for winning the rotary trophy at the ramsbottom music festival! growing together on gardening day our green-fingered garden enthusiasts had great fun on gardening day. they planted all of the summer bedding plants from the pta plant sale and also prepared their raised beds for a bumper crop of vegetables this summer. now all we need to do is keep watering! enjoying the view! we are encouraging all our parents and carers to complete the survey on the ofsted parent view website. it is very simple - just register an email address and have your say! the results are anonymous, but we would love to get as many responses as possible to get a true picture of your views. thank you! parent view website sponsored ‘spring in your step’! the children (and staff) used all their energy to complete this year’s spring in your step challenges - a 1 mile walk (or run), a series of springy activities and finally a session on a bouncy castle! at the end of the day there was a giant raffle of easter eggs, to say well done and thank you to everyone who completed the course! we are all raising money to make improvements to our playground facilities, so we thank everyone who has sponsored our lovely (and very energetic) children! great spring bake off! congratulations to all our talented bakers for putting on a magnificent show at this year’s great hazlehurst spring bake off!! the culinary creativity hit new heights and the judges had a very, very tough job picking the winners. thanks to the friends’ association for organising the event and to kath axon from cake craft of ramsbottom for lending her expertise when it came to the judging! we recommend that you do not view the photos if you are feeling hungry! year 3 graffiti art year 3 created ‘graffiti art’ and shared it as part of their class assembly. they researched the history of graffiti and had a debate about whether it should be classed as a form of art or just a type of vandalism. the children were very good at looking at the argument from both sides, but now it is time for you to decide what you think! sensory garden project we are hoping to create a new sensory garden this spring, to enhance the children’s play and learning. newsletters have been sent to give details of our ideas so far and everyone is invited to get involved! happy christmas ‘a king is born’ well done to all our young actors in the reception class for a lovely performance of their nativity play - a king is born. the show was enjoyed by everyone who came to watch it. thanks to the staff for all their excellent work in putting it all together. y1&2 christmas concert - ‘lights, camel, action!’ thanks to the children for giving a wonderful performance of this year’s christmas show. the singing, dancing and acting was excellent and the audience gave it 10 out of 10! thanks to the staff for putting it all together so brilliantly! ‘cinderella and rockerfella’ the applause went on and on ... and on! ... after the children’s brilliant performance of their christmas pantomime. the singing, acting and dancing was top notch the children’s infectious enthusiasm sent everyone with big christmas smiles on their faces. well done to one and all! a midwife crisis! no-one would listen to steve the donkey, who was actually full of good ideas about how to get to bethlehem to greet the new baby king! thankfully, steve and the midwife made it just in time to meet the shepherds and the wise men, and to join the celebrations! thanks to all the y3&4 children and staff for a wonderful nativity play. the audience loved it! y1 have been working on the three rs! year 1 had a fascinating day out at the recycling centre in liverpool. they learned all about the three rs - reduce, re-use and re-cycle and they saw a huge re-cycling plant in full swing. it was very interesting and gave them lots to think about! fantastic fair fun! thanks to everyone who helped to make our christmas fair such a big success. the friends association did a wonderful job of organising the event and there was a great turn-out from family and friends. the stalls and games were lots of fun, the entertainment from the school band kept the christmas spirit going, and the raffle was our biggest and best ever! the event raised £2145 for school. well done everyone! living history! y6 had a fascinating day when they turned the clock back to victorian times and went to work in the grand hall at tatton park. they scrubbed the floors, made the beds, cleaned the silver and made some tasty scones! then it was time to head back to school and to the present day for a good rest! year 1 visit to st andrew’s church the children had a fascinating time learning about what you would find in a christian church. they were given a warm welcome from the vicar and they had a very good look around. they even got to ring the church bell in the bell tower! thank you to everyone at st andrew’s for making us so welcome! art for art’s sake we had lots of fun when professor illustrator (martin olsson) came to school to lead our art day. he showed us how to create cartoon characters that had lots of personality and we all improved our drawing skills! then we went back to class and did art with our teachers all day! it was great! a bumper harvest! thanks to everyone who supported out harvest festival. it was great to see so many parents and friends in the audience. the musical performances from each class were wonderful and we were pleased to be able to donate over £500-worth of food to the food-bank charity, ‘porch boxes’. well done! who’s the king of the castle? y1 had a brilliant time on their castle day. they turned their classroom into a castle and prepared an enormous feast, which they ate together at a giant table. they even killed a dragon, which they found in the nature area! it was great fun! the pick of the crop! there was great excitement at the final weigh-in of the 2017 hazlehurst potato growing competition! each class dug up their prized potatoes and then gathered together in the school hall for the results to be revealed. as a school, we grew an amazing 100 kg of potatoes, but the overall winners were the children of year 5, who managed to grow an incredible 23 kg in their raised bed. y5&6 summer concert - the three little pigs roald dahl’s revolting rhyme came to life brilliantly in the y5&6 summer concert with an outstanding performance of the three little pigs. the singing, dancing and acting was superb, and the audience were all mighty relieved when the wolf got his ‘come-uppance’ at the hands of red riding hood! thanks to the staff for all their hard work and to the children for the wonderful entertainment! year 3&4 summer concert - ‘dragon days’ the children gave a wonderful performance of this hilarious musical show, which told the story of how a group of hapless villagers faced a fire-breathing dragon and lived to tell the tale! the audience loved the singing, dancing and acting. well done everyone! school band in the music for youth national festival symphony hall birmingham the school band gave a great performance in the national festival of music for youth. they were one of only two primary school brass bands in the country to be invited to take part and they put hazlehurst on the map with their wonderful playing and their excellent behaviour. thanks also to all the supporters who came to cheer them on. well done everyone! all the fun of the fair - summer 2017 everyone had a great time at this year’s summer fair. the rain stayed away and we even had a bit of sunshine at the end! the pony rides and owls were a big hit; there was an action-packed football competition; the refreshments from the barbecue and cake stall were delicious (as usual) and the event raised a wonderful £2300 for the school. thank you to the organisers and all the many helpers. well done! bring me sunshine! the school band gave a great performance in bury bandemonium. it was a scorcher, but everyone still played their best and there were lots of happy faces in bury town centre. well done everyone! the sky’s the limit our reception class had a great time then they went to visit manchester airport as part of their geography work. they learned lots of new facts about planes and even got to sit in the cockpit! who knows, maybe one day one of them will be a real pilot and take us all on holiday! sporting action in the summer heat! this year’s sports days were some of the hottest ever, but the children still gave every ounce of their energy as they battled for the prizes. thanks to everyone for making it such fun and for encouraging each other so well, and thanks to all the parents and friends who came along to cheer them on! infant sports day junior sports day discovery education the winning house team this week and this term was york extra playtime for great behaviour and excellent lining up was awarded to year 3 and year 4 in the golden book this week for outstanding personal achievements rec william for always being enthusiastic about everything!
